Neil Kernon

Post here your favorite mixing engineers

I don't know how many people here will be into this sort of music, but Neil Kernon's work I find really good. In particular the albums 'Annihilation of the Wicked' by Nile, and 'Words that go Unspoken, Deeds that go Undone' by Akercocke. In these two in particular he brings a massive amount of clarity to a genre which is very difficult to mix without it sounding muddy and like a blur of noise.

Ewan,

Did you really like the drum sound on 'Words that go Unspoken'?

By the way, check out a band called Emmure (any album, but possibly 'The Respect issue'). Like the mixes on it, though no idea who mixed it...

Cheers,

Yeh I think the drum sound work for their style, I sort of grew accustomed to it from their previous album, Choronzon. To me it's meant to sound cold and inhuman and I think it does that pretty well. It wouldn't work for a lot of metal bands though.

Interestingly, although their drummer uses trigger pads for the kicks, he refuses to have any time correction on the drums, so occasionally you do hear the double-kicks go slightly out, which is actually quite nice when these days a lot of bands just program the kicks.
